Charlotte Neuroscience Foundation dba Memory Center Charlotte is a 501c-3 organization. All fully tax-deductible gifts to Memory Center Charlotte are used to support the operations of Memory Center Charlotte, making its ground-breaking work possible.

Thomas H. Woollen, Jr., MD

Board Chairman

Dr. Woollen is a board certified family physician in Charlotte with Novant Medical 
Group, and has a special interest in emerging medical technologies, lipidology, executive health, and preventive wellness. He is founding partner and immediate past president of Novant Medical Group, a multi-specialty physician division of NovantHealth, with over 1000 physicians across North and South Carolina and Virginia.

Bernard Burns

Vice Chairman

Mr. Burns co-founded the Charlotte office of McGuire Woods Capital Group in 2001, which provides  merger and acquisition advisory services. He is also counsel to McGuire Woods, LLP, a 900-lawyer firm with 19 offices in the United States and Europe.

Cynthia Grim

Board Secretary

Ms. Grim is currently an independent consultant, continuing her work for Bank of America, specifically with the Parmalat criminal case. She previously worked for Bank of America in several areas, but most recently as a Managing Director and Senior Vice President, Debt Capital Markets.

Teresa Starr

Board Treasurer

Teresa Starr joins the Charlotte Neuroscience Foundation Board as an individual who has been involved in numerous volunteer and philanthropic activities over her 28 years in Charlotte. Teresa has served on the board of the Matthews Free Medical Clinic and worked in Admissions at Providence Day School and Queens University. She has volunteered with Women’s Impact Fund, Physician’s Impact Fund and St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church.

Carl J. Scharf

Board Director

Dr. Scharf is currently Staff Anesthesiologist at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center.  He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the NC Society of Anesthesiologists and the NC Medical Society.

William F. Lowry, Jr.

Board Director

Mr. Lowry founded Lowry & Associates, an independent insurance agency writing casualty, property and employee benefits coverage. He is an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he serves on the Vestry.

John Chanon

Board Director

Mr. Chanon is a retired CPA and formerly served as the NC Managing Partner for Tatum CFO Partners. Prior to that he worked for Ruddick Corporation for twenty five years in various positions including Senior Vice President of Finance for Harris-Teeter Supermarkets.


Mrs. Nancy Downing

Board Director

Mrs. Downing has been involved in numerous volunteer and philanthropic activities throughout her 18 years in Charlotte including the Board of Trustees at Providence Day School and Thompson Child and Family Focus. Her work with the Physician’s Impact Fund and the Women’s Impact Fund included fundraising, membership, grant evaluation and selection. Additionally, she has served in a variety of roles for Christ Episcopal Church.
